Two nonwovens can differ in composition, structure, surface and converting behaviour. Start with the product you intend to make: a carry bag, furniture lining, crop cover or filtration layer. The purpose narrows the choice before basis weight is selected.
Common families in purchasing
PP Spunbond is considered for packaging and linings. Meltblown appears in some filtration constructions; SSMMS combines spunbond and meltblown layers. PP/PE includes a film layer, while needle-punched material requires composition, thickness and basis weight to be clarified. Confirm suitability for the offered grade.
Four steps to a material choice
Define the layer function, identify cutting or joining methods, review samples and required performance, then agree roll presentation and acceptance. When changing suppliers, retain the current good sample and explain why a replacement is needed.
Properties not implied by the name
Not every nonwoven is waterproof, antibacterial, biodegradable, suitable for medical products or an effective filter. Such properties depend on the configuration and need appropriate evidence. Appearance and structure names do not replace technical documentation.
Buying by weight or length
Both require basis weight and usable width. Clarify whether weight excludes the core and packing, or how width and length tolerances are treated. Compare quotations using the same specification, unit and delivery scope.
Prepare for the first discussion
Send a finished-product photograph and current sample if no data sheet is available. Label the sample, relevant surface, converting process and problem to address. Include quantity and destination so technical and commercial needs can be discussed together.
