Start with the position in the product
An internal furniture layer has different requirements from an exposed bag surface. Colour, pilling and touch can matter more for visible surfaces, while cutting, bonding and assembly stability may matter more for hidden linings.
Do not substitute thickness for basis weight
Samples with similar thickness can have different mass and structure. Compare thickness, basis weight and composition together. Specify any compression, abrasion or flame-performance requirements separately and agree how they will be assessed.
Recycled-content statements need evidence
For a project requiring recycled material, ask about composition, percentage and documentation for the offered grade. Do not assume that all felt is recycled or has the same environmental characteristics. Suitability still depends on durability and the intended product life.
Frequently asked questions
Are felt and needle-punched fabric always identical?
Trade names can be broad. Specify composition, process if known, thickness and a reference sample rather than relying on the word felt alone.
Should I send my current sample?
Yes. It helps compare surface, thickness and converting behaviour. Agreed parameters should still be recorded in writing.
